Getting paid in dollars from Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal or a direct client feels like a different world. For Indian tax, it mostly isn't. Here's how it works.
Is it taxable in India?
If you're an Indian resident, yes: your worldwide income is taxable in India. Foreign client income is business or professional income, taxed at your slab rate on your profit.
Which number do you use?
The cleanest approach: the INR amount credited to your bank, backed by the bank's credit advice or a FIRC (Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate). Platform fees and conversion costs are business expenses; if you use the net amount received, they're already excluded.

If your work is a specified or notified profession, such as software development (IT), you can usually opt for 44ADA and declare 50% of receipts as income, within ₹50 lakh of receipts (or ₹75 lakh if cash receipts are within 5%). Designers, writers and marketers are usually treated as a business; 44AD may apply instead.
Tax abroad?
Most Indian freelancers fill a W-8BEN for US platforms so no US tax is withheld. If foreign tax was withheld, you may be able to claim credit in India under the tax treaty (DTAA). Ask a CA.
GST: export of services
Services to foreign clients are usually export of services, which is zero-rated. But the amounts still count towards the ₹20 lakh registration threshold. Once you cross it, register and file an LUT so you can keep invoicing without IGST.

Foreign clients don't deduct Indian TDS, so you'll likely owe advance tax in instalments through the year.
